The All-New Bosch Performance Line CX
Bosch has been a leader in e-bike innovation since introducing the Performance Line CX in 2015. The Performance Line CX quickly became a favorite among cyclists, combining power and control in a compact system. Fast forward seven years, and Bosch has released a fifth-generation update with even more impressive improvements. The latest update introduces advancements in weight reduction, motor integration, and overall ride quality. These new models come with enhanced thermal management, new motor software, and a streamlined mounting process for easy integration into various frames. Here at the shop, we have the Santa Cruz Vala, the Orbea Wild, and the Mondraker Crafty that all feature this new system.
Lightweight and Integrated Design
Bosch’s new motor design focuses on reducing weight and enhancing frame compatibility. The updated CX motor is 100 grams lighter than its predecessor and shares the same mounting points as its smaller counterpart, the SX. This design now allows it to fit in frames compatible with the Bosch SX model, offering users greater flexibility in their choice.
Performance Features
The 2024 Bosch CX motor still delivers 85 Nm of torque and 600 watts of peak power. However, the most noticeable update is a unique external decoupling mechanism that significantly reduces noise by allowing the motor to disconnect from the drivetrain. This innovation leads to an impressively quiet ride, enhancing the overall riding experience.
Bosch has equipped the CX motor with an advanced suite of sensors—tracking inertia, cadence, and speed—that work together to adjust motor output based on terrain. The motor intelligently detects whether the rider is moving uphill or downhill and adjusts assistance accordingly. Similar to how RockShox’s Flight Attendant or Fox’s Live Valve operates, this system determines the optimal power output needed at any given moment. The new 'Walk Mode' feature automatically adjusts the motor's output to match the rider's walking speed, while 'Hill Hold' prevents wheel spin when starting on steep inclines.
Improved Heat Management
Long climbs can push e-bike motors to their limits, often leading to heat buildup. While this was not a common issue on the previous model, it was still something that happened during very long climbs. Bosch’s new design generates less heat overall, reducing the need for the motor to initiate cooling breaks, even on demanding climbs. This means riders can enjoy a more consistent power output on long or technical climbs.
More Power And Less Weight
Bosch has also improved its battery options, bigger and smaller! The PowerTube is available in both 600 Wh and 800 Wh capacities, replacing the older 750 Wh version. The 800 Wh battery is 500 grams lighter than its predecessor, while the 600 Wh model shaves off an impressive 900 grams compared to the 800 Wh. Not every battery fits all models; the Vala and Crafty are specifically designed to support the 600 Wh PowerTube. Optional range extenders add another 250 Wh, extending the range for long rides. With a range extender you can have up to a full 1150 Wh, more than enough for anyone.
New Displays and Remotes
Some of you might be familiar with the previous Bosch Kiox system that had a LCD display on the handlebars, showing you all the needed information. The new display is built into the top tube and offers a more minimalist design, connected via cable in the frame for improved durability and reliability. This update prioritizes a cleaner cockpit, ensuring ease of use and quick access to essential readouts, though it offers less overall information to the rider.
Sitting neatly on the left hand side of the handlebars is the new remote. Bosch opted for a wireless setup allowing for easy setup and a clean overall cockpit.
