The Chris King DropSet 2 headset was created in response to the evolving design of modern bicycle frames, where headset bearings are often integrated directly into the frame’s headtube. After years of producing press-in-bearing headsets, Chris King recognized the need to adapt to these newer frame designs. Integrated headsets present a unique challenge because the bearings, not pressed into a cup, sit loosely in the frame, which can cause them to shift, lose preload, and become susceptible to creaking, damage, and failure. Chris King addressed this issue with their innovative GripLock bearing cap.

The patented GripLock bearing cap is designed to preload the headset independently of the steerer clamp, ensuring that the DropSet 2 retains preload more effectively than other headsets. This feature protects against the negative effects of load spikes from heavy impacts and hard braking, resulting in smoother steering, eliminating creaks, and extending the life of the headset. Additionally, the GripLock design simplifies the process of preloading the headset, as the bearing preload force is independent of the clamping force, allowing for precise torque specification.

The DropSet 2 is compatible with a variety of frame brands, including Open, 3T, All City, Low, Cinelli, and Lynskey.
